MIAMI, April 21 (UPI) -- A solid gold brick linked to a $4.9 million gold heist that took place in March has been recovered in South Florida, reports the FBI.

The gold bar, weighing about 26 pounds and worth at around $500,000, "confirms that there is a South Florida nexus to this crime," Special Agent Justin Fleck said. "We believe that additional gold bars from the robbery may still be in South Florida and we continue to need the public's help in solving this crime."

The FBI will not release further details about how the brick was found due to the ongoing investigation.

The heist, involving an armored vehicle and three armed men driving a white van, happened on the North Carolina stretch of Interstate 95 on March 1. NBC Miami reports that the truck carrying gold and silver was on its way to Massachusetts from South Florida.

Two guards working for Transvalue Inc. were attacked after pulling over to tend to mechanical problems at 6:30 p.m. that evening. The assailants pulled over behind them and announced themselves as "Policia," giving instructions in Spanish before restraining and marching the guards into a nearby wooded area.

The three men then broke into the truck and stole five buckets holding up to 275 pounds in gold bars, CBS News reports.

The robbers fled the scene in a white van, leaving about $5 million of silver in the armored vehicle.

The FBI released a statement on its website offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest of the unnamed robbers and the recovery of the stolen property.
