LOS ANGELES, April 10 (UPI) -- Los Angeles law enforcement closed hundreds of illegal medical marijuana dispensaries after local residents voted to limit the number of pot shops in the city.
City Attorney Mike Feuer announced Thursday that 503 illegal shops have been closed since 2013, when local voters decided to cap the number of medical marijuana clinics to 135. In the past two years, Feuer also targeted other avenues used for medical marijuana distribution, including smartphone apps used to arrange deliveries and farmer's market stands.
Many were close to schools, child care centers and other sensitive sites. Others were disrupting the quality of life in our neighborhoods," he said in a written statement.
At one point there were close to 700 marijuana dispensaries in the city limits, but today the number is closer to 120.
