NASHUA, N.H., April 6 (UPI) -- A top aide to Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., resigned Saturday after he was arrested during a prostitution sting in Nashua, N.H.

David Wihby, who had served as Ayotte's state director since March 2014, was charged with soliciting a prostitute.

Nashua Police said Wihby was one of 10 men arrested in the sting after they responded to online ads.

"There would be a talk about exchange of money for sexual acts and upon having that done where there was an agreement between the two of them, the individual would be placed under arrest," Nashua Police Capt. Denis Linehan told WMUR.

In a statement, Ayotte described Wihby as a longtime friend.

"I am shocked and deeply saddened that David Wihby, my state director and a friend for many years, has been arrested under these circumstances," Ayotte said. "David obviously cannot continue his duties, and I have accepted his resignation. This is a very difficult time, and my thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved."

Wihby, 62, is also a member of the Manchester, N.H., school board.
