SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, April 4 (UPI) -- Authorities suspect a murder-suicide after an unidentified couple from Cleveland, Ohio, was found dead in the cabin of a cruise ship in Puerto Rico on Thursday.

Cleaning staff discovered the middle-aged couple in their blood-soaked stateroom at 11:30 a.m. after the MS Ryndam stopped in San Juan, Puerto Rico, during a 14-day Southern Caribbean cruise that began in Tampa, Fla., on March 29.

Holland America released a statement saying the "cabin was immediately secured" and that authorities, including the FBI, had been notified.

The MS Ryndam was scheduled to depart San Juan for St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands on the day the couple was found, but passengers were forced to disembark the ship as crew members roped off portions of the scene for investigators.

"We are terribly saddened by this tragic event," New York Daily News quoted Holland America spokesman Erik Elvejord as saying.
