NORFOLK, Va., April 2 (UPI) -- A man who was missing at sea for 66 days was found and rescued by a German ship and the U.S. Coast Guard on Thursday.
Louis Jordan, 37, was first reported missing by his family Jan. 29 after he set off from the South Carolina coast.
His parents feared he was dead, but a German-flagged motor vessel, the Houston Express, spotted Jordan in his sailing vessel, Angel, about 200 miles east of Cape Hatteras, N.C.
Lt. Krystyn Pecora of the Coast Guard told CNN Jordan survived by catching fish with his hands and eating them raw, and cupping his hands to collect and drink rainwater.
A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter transported Jordan to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
The Coast Guard released audio of Jordan's first phone conversation with his father, Francis, after he was rescued.
Jordan told his father he was worried his parents were crying everyday thinking he was dead.
"We were. I thought I lost you," Francis says.
Jordan said he couldn't fix the sailboat, which had capsized, in order to sail back to the coast.
