Scaffold at construction site in Raleigh collapses, killing three

RALEIGH, N.C., March 23 (UPI) -- Three people died and one was injured after a scaffolding collapse at a construction site in downtown Raleigh, N.C.

The scaffold fell from a high-rise building into a parking lot at about 11 a.m. and metal pieces also crashed onto a nearby road.

Workers were in the process of removing and lowering the scaffolding before it fell. A witness who was working at the site, Leroy Kelly, said he was under the scaffolding when he heard a snap, as reported by WRAL.

"I ran, and it fell like 2 feet away from me," he said.

General contractor Choate Construction released a statement.

{q:"At approximately 11 a.m. this morning, a serious incident involving a mast climber scaffold occurred on the Charter Square project in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina. At this time, details as to the cause of the accident are not known.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and injuries suffered during this incident. Our first and primary concern is for these personnel and their families. We request your thoughts and prayers at this time.
