Police: Las Vegas woman killed in road rage went looking for suspect with armed son

LAS VEGAS, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- A Las Vegas woman who was killed in an apparent road rage incident drove around with her armed 22-year-old son looking for the suspect before she was shot in front of her home, police said.

Tammy Meyers, 44, had been giving her 15-year-old daughter a driving lesson when she had an encounter with another driver that left her scared and upset. She went home after the dispute, got her son with his registered firearm and followed a car she thought was involved in the incident, police said. Meyers was likely not followed home immediately after the road encounter as first thought.

"The vehicles and persons found each other," Las Vegas police Lt. Ray Steiber said. "Through the course of them finding each other, at one point Mrs. Meyers was following what we consider a suspect vehicle and then at another point they broke apart, and Mrs. Meyers went home."

Shortly after arriving home with her son, a silver or gray sedan pulled up and opened fire. Her son shot back.

"I did what I had to do to protect my family. Everyone can think what they have to think; I did it for a reason. And I'd do it for anyone I love," Meyers' son, Brandon, said at a vigil Tuesday.

The incident unfolded Thursday when Tammy Meyers and her daughter were heading home from the driving lesson. A car sped past them and Meyers' daughter reached over from the passenger's seat to honk the horn. The suspect's vehicle stopped in the road and walked over to Meyers' car. The two did not speak, police said. Meyers died Saturday after being taken off life support.
