By Danielle Haynes

MONTGOMERY, W.Va., Feb. 16 (UPI) -- The derailment of a train carrying crude oil has prompted emergency officials to evacuate the towns of Adena Village and Boomer Bottom, W.Va.

An area of about a mile and a half surrounding the train derailment is being evacuated after several of the train cars caught on fire. Multiple train cars and possibly some crude oil ended up in the Kanawha River.

The explosion caught multiple homes on fire.

Water systems in Montgomery and Cedar Grove, downriver from the incident, have also closed their intakes due to the potential oil spill, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Bureau for Public Health said. Residents in those areas were encouraged to conserve water.

No injuries have been reported.

The cause of the accident was being investigated.
