WASHINGTON, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Meteorologists have warned the temperatures in the northeastern United States this weekend will be the lowest in two decades.

Wind chill warnings and advisories have been posted as far south as Washington, D.C., with wind chill forecasts of zero degrees predicted for Washington, and of 15 to 30 degrees below zero for New York City, which is expecting temperatures below 10 degrees Monday.

The low temperatures are caused by three waves of cold air sweeping from Canada, across the Great Lakes and to the east. The National Weather Service has issued blizzard watches for much of New England, as well as cold weather warnings.

Buffalo, N.Y., awoke Friday to temperatures of 2 degrees below zero, and Canada's federal weather agency, Environment Canada, issued an extreme cold warning for much of southern Ontario on Friday, including the city of Toronto.

"A strong cold front has crossed southern Ontario ushering in much colder temperatures," the warning said. "The combination of cold temperatures and light winds will produce wind chills of minus 30 to minus 35 (degrees Celsius, or minus 22 to minus 31 degrees Fahrenheit) early this morning."
