SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and wife Dr. Priscilla Chan announced a $75 million donation to San Francisco General Hospital, possibly the largest private gift from an individual to a public hospital in the nation.

The donation will be used to complete the hospital's acute care and trauma center by funding state-of-the-art equipment and technology, the hospital's foundation said.

The social media giant and his wife, who worked for years at "The General" completing her pediatric residency, said they consider the Bay Area their home and want to give back.

"To serve our community in San Francisco, we can think of no better place to focus than The General," Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post. "To add some specifics, our contribution today will allow The General to double the size of its new emergency room and quadruple the number of beds, and provide state of the art equipment for healthcare providers and first responders."

The donation is the largest given to the hospital's foundation since it was established in 1994 and possibly the "largest single private gift from individuals to a public hospital in the United States," the foundation said.
