NEW YORK, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Brian Williams, the anchor for NBC Nightly News has announced he's temporarily stepping down after a recent controversy.
The anchor apologized on Wednesday for incorrectly stating on several occasions that he was in a helicopter that was shot down in Iraq in 2003, when it was actually a helicopter near the one he was in. He had blamed the "fog of memory" for the mistake.
Williams announced Saturday that he will be taking a break from anchoring his NBC program, saying he is currently "too much a part of the news."
"As Managing Editor of NBC Nightly News, I have decided to take myself off of my daily broadcast for the next several days," Williams said in a statement. "Upon my return, I will continue my career-long effort to be worthy of the trust of those who place their trust in us."
