TOLEDO, Ohio, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Mayor D. Michael Collins of Toledo, Ohio suffered a heart attack while drving home during a heavy snow storm Sunday.
A fast-food worker who performed CPR on Collins may have saved his life.
Evelyn Johnson said other drivers were just going on their way after Collins' SUV hit a pole Sunday afternoon. She called 911 and then performed CPR under guidance from a dispatcher.
Johnson, 42, who had to break a window to get the mayor out of his vehicle, gave most of the credit to the 911 operator. She got help from an unidentified man who also stopped.
"I had no clue he was the mayor," she said.
Collins,70, was on his way home from a news conference and Johnson on her way to work at a fast-food restaurant.
Toledo was under a Level 3 snow emergency. Officials said only essential employees should go to work, and everyone should stay off the roads.
A major snowstorm was moving east after paralyzing Chicago.
The mayor was in critical condition Monday at the University of Toledo Medical Center. The city council president was sworn in as acting mayor.
"At this point it is too early yet to establish the timing or likelihood of his recovery," said Dr. Christopher Cooper, the hospital's cardiology chief.
