Justice Department not likely to file civil rights charges against Darren Wilson

By Danielle Haynes

WASHINGTON, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- The Justice Department doesn't plan to recommend civil rights charges against the white police officer who killed an unarmed black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri, last year.

Law enforcement sources told The New York Times and CBS News that Attorney General Eric Holder intends to release a report explaining the department's decision not to file civil rights charges against police officer Darren Wilson. That report is expected to come before Holder leaves office in the next month or two.

Wilson shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown on Aug. 9, sparking protests of police aggression and racism in the town outside St. Louis. The protests grew nationwide after a grand jury declined to file criminal charges against Wilson.

An investigation by the Justice Department found there was no evidence to support civil rights charges against Wilson, law enforcement sources said. A civil rights investigation into the Ferguson Police Department is ongoing.
