BOSTON, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- A doctor at a major Boston hospital, Brigham and Women's, was critically wounded Tuesday by a gunman who apparently targeted him, police said.

The alleged shooter then took his own life in a hospital examination room. Police Commissioner Bill Evans said the weapon was found by his body.

Sources told WHDH-TV that the gunman's mother had been a patient of the cardiac surgeon until her death about a month ago.

Evans said the doctor suffered life-threatening wounds from two bullets and was in surgery. The alleged gunman's body was found by a police during a search of the second floor of the hospital's Shapiro Cardiovascular Center.

The man asked for the doctor by name when he arrived at the building, Evans said.

"He was targeted, and the reason right now is not clear," Evans said. "There's something in the past that upset this guy to come in looking for this particular doctor."

Evans said the first call came in just after 11 a.m. and police arrived at the scene quickly.
