Gohmert challenging Boehner for Speaker of the House

By Andrew V. Pestano

WASHINGTON, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, announced he will run against current Speaker of the House John Boehner, R-Ohio, in the next election.

Gohmert said many Republicans would vote against Boehner, but lacked options. He announced his candidacy publicly on Fox News Channel.

Rep. Ted Yoho, R-Fla., will also be running, Gohmert said.

"Eventually the goal is... we have enough people that say 'You know what? It really is time for a change. You [Boehner] deceived us when you went to Obama and Pelosi," Gohmert said.

Gohmert said "we will fight amnesty tooth and nail" if he wins the leadership position. "We'll have better oversight" and "we'll fight to defund Obamacare."

Gohmert said the idea that Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif, would win if someone ran against Boehner is "hogwash."

"There is no chance of Pelosi winning as long as 59 Republicans don't vote present," and vote for an actual candidate, Gohmert said.
