OLDSMAR, Fla., Jan. 1 (UPI) -- A Florida man allegedly killed his mother and cut off her head because she had been nagging him, sheriff's deputies said.

Christian Jose Gomez, 23, was arrested New Year's Eve as he rode his bicycle a few blocks from the home he shared in Oldsmar with his mother and older brother.

Gomez was being held without bail in the Pinellas County Jail on a first-degree murder charge. Investigators said he admitted the killing when he was questioned.

Mario Gomez called police after he found the body of Maria Suarez-Cassagne,48, outside the house. Suarez-Cassagne's head was in a garbage can.

Investigators said Christian Gomez tried to dump the body in the trash as well but was unable to lift it.

The killing was not a spur of the moment act, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said. He said that Christian, angry because his mother had been nagging him about moving some boxes into the attic, had been planning it for two days.

Christian allegedly hit his mother with the ax, killing her, before he removed her head. Mario Gomez thought the noises he heard came from Christian moving the boxes.

A relative told WFLA-TV that Christian had been diagnosed with schizophrenia.

"She was a really good mother," the family member said. "And Christian was normal until like age 20 -- I think when he was diagnosed. It's so confusing what happened. It's scary."
