SACRAMENTO, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- The western border of the United States rang in 2015 with a series of small earthquakes stretching from south of Los Angeles to northern California near the Oregon border.
Southern California was hit with 3.9-magnitude earthquake originating 12 miles off the shore of San Pedro, just south of Los Angeles, but residents described the shocks as feeling like a higher magnitude event.
"Felt much stronger than a 3.9," described Chris DuRee to KTLA. DuRee was in Long Beach when the tremors reached southern California.
"Rattled softly and then a few strong rolls."
Further north, the United States Geological Survey measured a 5.1-magnitude quake in the ocean off the coast of northern California near the Oregon maritime border. Those tremors reached land just about 12 hours after the inital quakes south of Los Angeles. Slight shaking was reported in Ferndale, Calif., about 100 miles south of Oregon. That quake was originally measured as a 5.3 magnitude event and later adjusted.
