Reports: Rep. Michael Grimm expected to resign

NEW YORK, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm, R-N.Y., is expected to announce his resignation this week after pleading guilty to tax fraud.

Sources told multiple news outlets Monday that Grimm will make his announcement either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Grimm initially said he would not resign after his guilty plea Tuesday. He pleaded guilty to one count of aiding in the preparation of a false tax return in 2009.

Sources told the New York Daily News Grimm changed his mind after speaking to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, on Monday.

Michael Steel, Boehner's spokesman, declined to comment on the possible resignation.

"We do not discuss private conservations the speaker has with members," Steel said.

Grimm is scheduled to be sentenced for the tax evasion charge June 8.
