Track official dies after being struck by weight at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y., Dec. 10 (UPI) -- A 75-year-old track and field official died after being struck in the head with a weight at a meet at Cornell University, the school said.

Douglas Koba, 75, of Endicott, N.Y., was hit in the head by a weight implement during warm-ups Saturday at the Greg Page Invitational at Barton Hall.

He was contracted by the school to officiate the track meet and was taken to Cayuga Medical Center after the incident. The competition was halted after the injury. He died Sunday.

"USATF Niagara is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Doug Koban," David Reinhardt, president of USA Track & Field Niagara, said Tuesday. "We extend our deepest condolences to his family. He will be missed by the entire track community and especially those who shared his passion for the sport of athletics.

Cornell police were investigating the incident, though foul play is not suspected.
