AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- An Austin, Texas, man who fired at the federal courthouse and Mexican consulate early Friday was gunned down outside police headquarters, investigators said.
The man, identified as Larry Steven McQuilliams, 49, exchanged gunfire with an officer after firing a "fusillade"at the police building, Police Chief Art Acevedo said. Investigators were still unsure late Friday morning whether he was killed by Sgt. Adam Johnson or took his own life.
Johnson was corralling horses used by mounted patrols when he heard gunfire shortly before 2:30 a.m., Acevedo said.
The police building was evacuated and Interstate 35 closed after officers noticed cylinders in the gunman's SUV and found he was wearing what could have been either a protective or suicide vest. The bomb squad was summoned to the scene.
No one besides the gunman was injured, Assistant Chief Raul Munguia said.
Acevedo said the man had a criminal record but did not release details. He did not speculate on a motive for the gunfire.
