'Frozen' pushes Barbie down list of top holiday toys

Barbie is no longer the No. 1 toy for girls this holiday season.

NEW YORK, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- Barbie has been iced by the characters from Disney's immensely popular Frozen film, which hit theaters in 2013.

According to the National Retail Foundation's Holiday Top Toys Survey, released Monday, Frozen toys are the most sought-after gifts for girls this holiday season.


That means Anna and Elsa have pushed Barbie, who first hit shelves in 1959, down from the No. 1 spot for the first time in 11 years.

It's been a tough year for Barbie. Sales for Mattel's iconic doll fell 21 percent in the third quarter of 2014.

The survey, which separates toys by gender, named LEGO merchandise as the most popular gift idea for boys.
