2 young Minneapolis men charged with conspiring to aid IS

FBI agents say IS and al-Shabaab have targeted young Somali-American men in the Minneapolis area for recruitment.

MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- A young Minneapolis man now believed to be in the Middle East and another who was stopped at the airport have been charged with conspiring to aid Islamic State.

A federal criminal complaint charges Abdullahi Yusuf, 18, and Abdi Nur, 20 with conspiracy to "engage in a campaign of terror in support of a violent ideology," U.S. Attorney Andy Luger said. Yusuf was schedule to make an initial court appearance Tuesday.

Both are natives of Somalia. FBI investigators say that recruiters for IS and the Somali extremist group al-Shabaab have targeted young men in the Somali-American community in Minneapolis area.

Federal prosecutors launched a grand jury investigation in May.

FBI agents detained Yusuf at the airport on May 28, preventing him from boarding a flight to Istanbul, the complaint said.

Nur flew to Istanbul the next day. He was scheduled to return in June but allegedly joined ISIS in Syria instead.
