PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- The man suspected of kidnapping a Philadelphia woman and a Virginia teenager was released from prison last year after a sentence for attacking his wife.

Delvin Barnes, 37, moved to Virginia after serving more than seven years in a Pennsylvania prison. He now faces charges that could keep him behind bars for decades if he is convicted.

Lamar Barnes told WCAU-TV in Philadelphia that his nephew's father is a minister and he got a good upbringing.

"Some men grew up having problems with women, so they take it out on women," Lamar Barnes said. "Apparently, he's one of them."

In 2005, Barnes' estranged wife told police she returned home to find him hiding in the closet. She said she was physically assaulted, threatened and forced to have sex with him throughout the night. He was also charged with attacking his wife's parents when they arrived at the home in the morning in response to a phone call.

While Barnes was acquitted of rape, he was convicted of aggravated assault. He had an earlier conviction in 2001 for robbery.

The Parole Board rejected four requests for early release, saying Barnes "lacked remorse for the offenses he committed."

Barnes allegedly abducted a Richmond, Va., 16-year-old Oct. 1, taking her to his home in Charles City, Va. The girl escaped Oct. 3, fleeing to a building supply company two miles away.

He faces attempted murder and sexual assault charges. The girl told police Barnes poured gasoline and bleach on her and dug a grave.

Carlesha Freeland-Gaither, 22, was snatched off the street Sunday in Philadelphia as she returend home from a family party. The kidnapping was reported by a man who saw it unfold and captured by security cameras.

Barnes was arrested Wednesday and Freeland-Gaither rescued after police tracked his car to Jessup, Md.

Investigators said Barnes did not know either Freeland-Gaither or the Richmond teen.

Barnes has been returned to Virginia to face the charges there.
