Ryanair planes collide at Dublin Airport

DUBLIN, Ireland, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Passengers looked on in horror as two Ryanair jets collided on the tarmac at Dublin Airport Tuesday morning, as a "winglet" from one plane became lodged in the tail of the other.

The two Boeing 373s were taxing on the runway when the they clipped wings. The winglet -- the end of the wing that juts upward -- broke off one plane and in pictures can be seen stuck in the side tailfin of the other jet.

"You could feel the plane tug and then we stopped," passenger Andrea Cunningham told RTE's Morning Ireland. "We were on the plane for about an hour, maybe short of an hour."

A Ryanair spokeswoman confirmed the incident and apologized to customers for the inconvenience.

Flights were temporarily grounded and emergency crews were called to the scene. Meanwhile, the Irish Aviation Authority said it was investigating the incident.

"The Air Accident Investigation Unit of the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport has been notified and will conduct a further investigation,"a spokesman said.

"Dublin Airport is now fully operational, although passengers may anticipate some delays as a result of this morning's incident and are asked to check with their airlines directly for further information."
