DETROIT, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Pit bulls attacked a Detroit man who was found naked and with injuries so severe, he lost both his hands and feet, police said.

The 40- to 50-year-old man, whose name wasn't reported, was found "pinned down" under a pack of pit bulls with injuries to his arms below his elbows, Detroit Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Woody told the Detroit Free Press.

The man was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

In order to rescue the man, police said they tried to lure the animals away, which had escaped from a nearby house.

"That's why they had to do what they had to do, because his life was in jeopardy," Woody said, adding that "the officers very tactfully tried to draw the dogs away to get to the man and had to shoot one."

The owner of the home from where the dogs escaped was escorted away by police later Thursday. There were a total of 12 dogs inside the residence.

"They were pretty vicious," Woody said.
