Ted Nugent blames 'plague of black violence' on 'Fedzilla welfare crack program'

WASHINGTON, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Ted Nugent, known by now more for his outspoken political views than his career as a rock singer, is making waves with a new column wading into the debate around Ferguson, Mo., and race.

Nugent, riffing on the shooting of a Ferguson police officer who was investigating a break-in -- an event unrelated to the death of Michael Brown -- blamed "liberalism and their insane cult of denial" for a "plague of black violence."

"It is liberalism that engineered and created the very conditions that have decimated and destroyed black American families and their communities," he writes in a column for World News Daily. Astonishingly and regretfully, the overwhelming majority of black Americans continue to vote for the very political party that has destroyed them."

Making an argument that lands somewhere between Welfare Queens and Mitt Romney's 47 percent, he blames violence on poverty and poverty on "the big lie of liberalism."

"It is deaf, dumb and blind liberalism that has shoveled over $20 trillion into Fedzilla's welfare crack programs over the past 50 years," Nugent writes. "Their big lie is that this was all done to eliminate poverty. What it really has done is waste this gargantuan pile of money while doing nothing to eliminate poverty, but in fact, increase it."

While research shows violence and poverty do go hand-in-hand, and that both disproportionately affect black and other minority communities, Nugent trades on stereotypes rather than data to back up his assertions.

"Based on crime stats in Ferguson and elsewhere, it would be a safe bet to assume the two thugs the police are looking for are black males between the age of 15 and 25," he says of the perpetrators of this week's shooting. "It would also be a safe bet the two thugs being searched for were raised by a single parent, have criminal records, are high school dropouts, don't have jobs and are very likely to be members of a gang."

"The Ferguson thugs aren't alone. The overwhelming majority of violent crime across America is conducted by young, black males who, sadly, are on the self-inflicted expressway to prison or an early grave -- or more often than not, both."

In fact, the FBI found violent crimes not only drastically decreased over the past several decades, but that white people commit more of them. (Violent crime is still proportionately higher among blacks.)

"White individuals were arrested more often for violent crimes than individuals of any other race, accounting for 58.7 percent of those arrests" in 2012, the FBI said.

Nugent, whose record discussing race includes calling President Obama a "subhuman mongrel" and defending both apartheid and using the n-word, instead ignored a number of real factors impacting the African-American community.

Unmentioned in Nugent's article: a pattern of unarmed black men shot by police, historical policies such as redlining that cut black communities off from safer neighborhoods or better jobs and schools, bias against African-Americans in hiring practices, or studies that find people judged black children as young as 10 to be less innocent than their white or Latino peers.
