WASHINGTON, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- A new poll out of Iowa shows Republican Senate candidate Joni Ernst six points ahead of Democratic candidate Bruce Braley.

The poll, conducted by the Des Moines Register, shows Ernst at 44 percent and Braley at 38 percent 37 days before the Nov. 4 elections.

"Very interesting, and good news not just for Ernst but also for the GOP's chances of taking the U.S. Senate," said Larry Sabato of "Sabato's Crystal Ball."

The jump comes after a contentious debate between the two candidates with flying accusations about their financial backing from billionaire Koch brothers and environmentalist Tom Steyer.

Braley defended his changing stance on the Keystone XL pipeline while Ernst said she did not know if climate change was man-made.
