NEW YORK, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Chelsea Clinton announced the birth of her baby girl by sending out a tweet early Saturday morning. The baby, named Charlotte Clinton Mezvinsky, was born late Friday in New York City.

"Marc and I are full of love, awe and gratitude as we celebrate the birth of our daughter, Charlotte Clinton Mezvinsky," Clinton said through her verified Twitter account. The same message was also posted to Facebook, both receiving thousands of likes and retweets within minutes.

Clinton and her husband reportedly did not know the gender of their baby until she was born. Ms. Clinton announced her pregnancy alongside her mother at a benefit on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in April.

"I certainly feel all the better whether it's a girl or a boy that they'll grow up in a world with so many strong female leaders," Ms. Clinton said at that event.

In an interview earlier this week, Bill Clinton told Good Morning America of his hopes for his future grandchild.

"I want them to get up every day and look at the world with wonder and reverence," he said. "I want them to respect everyone they meet, whatever their background."
