BLOOMING GROVE, Pa., Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Evidence found on the hard drive of a computer used by Eric Matthew Frein indicated the survivalist allegedly researched the ambush that killed a Pennsylvania state trooper for years.
Frein, 31, has led law enforcement on a manhunt for about two weeks after allegedly shooting to death Cpl. Bryon Dickson. The ambush also injured Trooper Alex Douglass.
Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens told CNN on Friday that the attack wasn't spontaneous according to information found on Frein's computer.
Frein had allegedly researched topics such as "how to avoid police manhunts, use of various law enforcement technologies and skills related to survival," Bivens said.
"It did give us a lot of insight into the techniques that he might be employing -- what his escape might involve," Bivens said. "But it did not provide as much information as we might have hoped had it been his own computer."
Investigators on Friday said they had a better idea of Frein's location after he made a brief cell phone call to his parents.
Police said they have closed in on a 5-square-mile area in northeast Pennsylvania.
