CLEMSON, S.C., Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Prosecutors have been given allegations of crimes involving fraternities following a student's drowning, Clemson University in South Carolina said.

The death of Tucker Hipps, 19, remains under investigation, Clemson officials said. Hipps was running with other members of Sigma Phi Epsilon early Monday morning when he fell off a bridge into Lake Hartwell.

Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw said there is no evidence the death was the result of hazing. He said Hipps apparently fell behind the rest of the group during the run, and toxicology tests could determine if he had been drinking.

The Interfraternity Council voted to suspect fraternity activities after the death.

"It is especially prudent to suspend fraternity activities given the tragic death of Tucker Hipps," said Student Affairs Vice President Gail DiSabatino. "There has been a high number of reports of serious incidents involving fraternity activities, ranging from alcohol-related medical emergencies to sexual misconduct. These behaviors are unacceptable and mandate swift and effective action to protect students. There is no higher priority than the safety and welfare of our students."

Clemson is one of the best-known public universities in the South.
