NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- A critically ill person was taken off a cargo ship anchored near New Orleans Wednesday afternoon and swiftly put into an ambulance staffed by personnel in Hazmat suits.

There had been worries that since the vessel had traveled near West Africa those on board may have the Ebola virus.

The CDC said that even though the chances that the crew were sickened by Ebola was low, they were taking extra precautions.

After CDC officials boarded the ship they determined the illness is malaria, and is not contagious.

Three sailors are in the hospital. The remaining crew will remain on the ship to be evaluated.
