HONOLULU, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- An off-duty Honolulu police officer reportedly set his gun on a toilet paper dispenser in a Target bathroom before accidentally firing it.

The officer walked into the bathroom, took his weapon out of the holster, put it on the dispenser and accidentally pulled the trigger and fired when he went to pick it up.

HPD officers, whether on or off duty, should not remove their gun from their holster unless storing it or using it in the line of duty. Officers usually remove the entire holster when in the bathroom with the gun safely in its holster. Protocols like these are universal among police forces and are meant to prevent accidental shootings.

Target has been the center of firearm-related fervor after telling customers not to bring weapons into its stores.
