HARVEY, Ill., Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Two men remained barricaded in a Chicago-area home early Wednesday, hours after they wounded two police officers and took two women and six children hostage.

The standoff in Harvey, Ill., an impoverished city near Chicago, began Tuesday afternoon, police said. Two men allegedly fired at officers responding to a robbery call, wounding both of them, and then retreated into a house where they took hostages.

Four children, three toddlers and an 11-year-old, had been released by 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, but two women and two children remained inside the house. Sean Howard, a city spokesman, said the rescued children had not been physically harmed.

"Everything's fine, as it relates to their physical health. They were taken to a nearby hospital for observation," Howard said. "I think it's more trauma, mentally, than it is physical."

One of the officers, Daniel Keel, was shot several times in one arm, which was broken. He was released from a hospital late Tuesday.

The other officer suffered a graze wound.
