Hope Solo trial set for Nov., won't conflict with World Cup qualifying

KIRKLAND, Wash., Aug. 13 (UPI) -- U.S. Women's Soccer star Hope Solo will face trial on November 4 for domestic violence charges stemming from an incident in June.

A Kirkland, Wash., Municipal Court judge set the date at a courtroom hearing Monday, where Solo, 33, appeared with her husband, former NFL player Jerramy Stevens.

"We were hoping for a trial as early as possible," said Solo's attorney Todd Maybrown. "Looking at the schedule, November was the earliest date possible."

The judge will consider a motion from Solo's attorney to dismiss the case at the November hearing.

Solo, the goalkeeper for the Seattle Reign who helped the national team to gold medals in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, has pleaded not guilty to gross-misdemeanor charges and faces up to six months in jail.

The trial date is not expected to conflict with Reign matches nor the October qualifying matches for the 2015 World Cup.

Solo was arrested after police were called to her sister's Kirkland home on June 21, where she was allegedly "going crazy and hitting people."

According to court documents, police heard shouting and found Solo's sister and 17-year-old nephew crying with visible injuries. Police said Solo was drunk, and after spending two days in jail and pleading not guilty to two counts fourth-degree domestic assault, she was released on her own recognizance.

She released a statement of apology on Facebook on June 26, calling the incident "highly unfortunate" and said she was confident her name would be cleared.

"I understand that, as a public figure, I am held to a higher standard of conduct," she said. "I take seriously my responsibilities as a role model and sincerely apologize to everyone I have disappointed."

Solo has been playing and practicing with the Seattle Reign while awaiting trial, and the team has said it would wait until the trial's outcome before deciding her future with the team.
