CHARLOTTE, N.C., Aug. 12 (UPI) -- A North Carolina mother has been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile after she allegedly helped facilitate the recording of a video of her son taking the "Fire Challenge."
Janie Talley's son lit himself on fire and recorded it, presumably with the intention of posting the video on YouTube, Facebook or another social networking site.
According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, the 16-year-old can be seen pouring fingernail polish remover on his body and lighting himself ablaze. The boy suffered minor burns to his chest and neck area.
Talley, 41, "was present and aware of what her son (was) doing and facilitated the recording," the Charlotte Observer reported.
Facebook has attempted to remove similar Fire Challenge videos in order to put off others from participating in the dangerous activity.
"The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department discourages this activity due to the extreme danger it poses to everyone involved and takes all complaints seriously," according to a department statement.
