GOSHEN, Calif., Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Tye "Glenn" Champ, who ran an unsuccessful campaign for California's 2014 Republican nominee for governor, was arrested Friday in connection with a Thursday shooting that injured one man and killed a horse.

The 48-year-old failed gubernatorial candidate was arrested Friday, as news broke about the strange circumstances that made him a wanted man.

Police say Champ got into a dispute with his neighbor about construction being done on a private road near their Prather-area homes. In the course of the dispute, Champ allegedly drew a pistol and fired multiple times, injuring his neighbor and killing a horse.

"According to witness statements, Mr. Champ confronted the 40-year-old adult victim and his juvenile son and then shot the adult with a small black pistol," the Fresno County Sheriff's Department said in an official statement.

"As the victim and son fled, Mr. Champ allegedly fired multiple additional shots, striking and killing a horse."

Friday's arrest is far from Champ's first run in the law. The would-be Republican politician managed to finish fifth in his party's 2014 California gubernatorial primary, despite being a registered sex offender convicted of voluntary manslaughter and assault with intent to commit rape.

In 1993, Champ was convicted of two counts of assault with intent to commit rape, earning him a place on California's state sex-offender registry. Six years later, a month after being arrested for trying to solicit a prostitute, Champ entered a no contest plea to voluntary manslaughter for hitting a man with his vehicle, something he calls a "tragic accident."

Upon losing the Republican primary to Neel Kashkari, Champ posted a message on his campaign website condemning the state, writing, "It is apparent that California does not want any form of God."

"So, please prepare yourself for the carnage that's coming, from the wrath of Jesus the Christ."
