Son of Philadelphia congressman charged with bank fraud

Chaka Fattah Jr., the son of a longtime Philadelphia congressman, said the charges against him are "politically motivated."

PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- The son of U.S. Rep. .Chaka Fattah was charged Tuesday in Philadelphia with defrauding banks of thousands of dollars in bad loans.

Chaka Fattah Jr. surrendered to federal authorities Tuesday morning. The investigation had been underway since at least 2012.

Fattah's father, a Democrat who has represented a Philadelphia district in Congress since 1995, was not mentioned in the indictment. Fattah was charged with using a network of companies to obtain fraudulent loans totaling more than $200,000 and with income tax violations.

"This entire investigation has been politically motivated, and I'm looking forward to my day in court," Fattah told WPVI-TV on his way into the courthouse.

The congressman released a statement of support.

"I am confident the facts will clear his name," he said. "I have full confidence in my son; I love him and stand by him today and every day."
