ATLANTA, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- A plane carrying a second American infected with Ebola has arrived in the United States, landing in Maine before departing for its ultimate destination in Atlanta.
North Carolina resident Nancy Writebol is being transported from Monrovia, Liberia, where she contracted the Ebola virus while treating victims of the outbreak for the charity SIM USA. Writebol was diagnosed and officially admitted as an Ebola patient on July 25.
SIM USA president Bruce Johnson told MSNBC that Writebol was "up and walking" after receiving the same experimental treatment that is credited with Dr. Kent Brantly's rapidly improving condition. Brantly and Johnson were part of the same medical team in Monrovia.
"[Nancy and her husband David] turned down the opportunity to evacuate when Ebola struck Liberia," Rep. Robert Pittenger, R-S.C., said on the floor of Congress on July 30.
"[Nancy and David] could have chosen an easy route. Instead they chose a higher calling of sacrificial love and service."
Since receiving the experimental treatment, Nancy has reportedly regained her appetite, requesting potato soup, her favorite Liberian dish.
David has been with Nancy throughout the infection, visiting his wife through windows in barriers or while wearing a HAZMAT suit.
