ARMADA, Mich., Aug. 1 (UPI) -- A funeral mass was held Friday for 14-year-old April Millsap, killed as she walked her dog, in the church in Armada, Mich., where she was confirmed three months ago.

About 200 people were at the service at St. Mary Mystical Rose. Brenda Szalka of Armada, accompanied by her husband and two young children, told the Detroit Free Press she did not know April but mourned her as "somebody's daughter."

April's dog, Penny, led joggers to her body July 24. The body was in a drainage ditch near the Macomb Orchard Trail, a former railroad right of way, where April went to walk Penny the night before.

Police have released few details about the investigation. Szalka said she was among the Armada residents stopped at checkpoints in the rural town north of Detroit as police and FBI agents tried to find anyone with helpful information.

Two men were arrested earlier this week after a search on a house in neighboring St. Clair County. But police said they were being held on drug charges.

Many of those at the funeral wore pink and pink bows were tied to trees and utility poles in Armada and along the roads in the area to honor April.
