Woman dies on U.S. Airways redeye from Honolulu to Phoenix

Rescuers were waiting on the tarmac, but the woman was pronounced dead on the scene.

PHOENIX, July 30 (UPI) -- A woman died aboard a Phoenix-bound U.S. Airways flight Wednesday.

Flight officials aboard U.S. Airways flight 693 out of Honolulu notified Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport of an emergency during their descent when the unidentified woman lost consciousness.

Phoenix Fire Department arrived on the scene when the plane landed around 6:45 a.m., but the woman's heart had stopped beating. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

According to Phoenix Fire Department Capt. Mark Vanacore, the woman, believed to be in her 50s, suffered from "some sort of medical event" that caused her mid-flight death.

Neither U.S. Airways nor its merger partner American Airlines have commented on the situation. No further details have been made available.
