DOBBS FERRY, N.Y., July 30 (UPI) -- A New York man is dead after driving his Chevrolet Camaro off an area bridge in what police say may have been a drag racing accident.
According to police, just after 12:10 a.m. Wednesday morning an orange and black striped 2010 Chevy Camaro sped off the highway in Dobbs Ferry, flying off the elevated ramp and striking a maple tree before falling 20 to 30 feet into the brush on the side of the road.
The sports car was traveling so fast that it penetrated an 18-inch-high concrete barrier with metal guardrails before becoming airborne and colliding with the tree.
The driver was pronounced dead on the scene.
According to the Journal News, police were spotted at a nearby Dunkin' Donuts interviewing a man in his late teens or early twenties driving a late-model Dodge Charger. The man reportedly told police he was waiting at the breakfast chain for a friend he feared had been killed, but declined to give further information.
A motorcycle club arrived on the scene just before 8 a.m. Local reporters say the club appeared to know the victim but refused to speak with the press.
