NEW YORK, July 23 (UPI) -- The city that never sleeps is making people cranky according to a July study by the U.S. National Bureau of Economic Research who ranked it last in America's happiest cities.
The "Unhappy Cities" working paper, co-written by professors at Harvard University and the University of British Columbia, used information from a Center for Disease Control and Prevention survey that measured the level of satisfaction in people's lives. They adjusted the findings for age, sex, race, income, marital status, level of education and other factors. The adjustments put the Big apple in dead last, coming in at 367.
The five happiest cities all came from one state: Louisiana. They include Lafayette, Houma, Shreveport-Bossier City, Baton Rouge and Alexandria. The five unhappiest cities are New York, N.Y.; St. Joseph, Mo.; South Bend, Ind.; Erie, Pa., and the areas around Evansville-Henderson, Ind.-Ky.
Washington, D.C. may be the center for partisanship and gridlock, but is still ranked in the top 50.
