HOUSTON, July 10 (UPI) -- A man suspected of killing six family members -- four of them children -- in the Houston suburb of Spring, surrendered after a standoff, police said Thursday.
The suspect was identified as Ron Lee Haskell, 33. He allegedly shot seven people, including a teenage girl who was reported to be in critical condition late Wednesday.
Mark Herman, a Harris County police spokesman, said police arrived at a home in Spring at about 6 p.m. Wednesday. Two of the seven people there were still alive, although one died after being taken to a hospital, and one was able to identify Haskell as the shooter and to say that he planned to kill other relatives at another house.
That information probably saved lives, Herman said, since officers arrived at the home just before Haskell.
"As soon as they got over there, he came driving up, and that's when the chase started," Herman said.
Police used stop strips to disable Haskell's car. He surrendered after several hours of negotiation in a cul-de-sac in a nearby subdivision.
The names of the victims had not been released early Thursday. The Harris County Sheriff's Office said they were a man, 39, woman, 34, two boys who were 4 and 13 and two girls who were 6 and 9, while the survivor was 15.
