Abandoned baby girl rescued from New York subway platform

NEW YORK, July 7 (UPI) -- An abandoned baby was found at New York City's Columbus Circle subway station in Manhattan on Monday.

Witnesses told police they saw a woman riding the subway pushing a stroller with a baby girl in it around noon. When their train arrived at Columbus Circle, the woman allegedly pushed the stroller and its young passenger out of the subway car and onto the platform. The woman remained on the train as it pulled out of the station.

The baby was rescued by a 33-year-old onlooker who stayed with the child assuming the incident was an accident and the mother would soon return. She never did.

The unidentified child had a slight rash and bandages on one of her hands, but police said there were no visible signs of trauma. She is currently in the custody of New York's Administration for Children's Services until police learn her identity.

Although the circumstances surrounding the incident are suspicious, police have not ruled out the possibility that something on the train unexpectedly prompted the woman to run away. Authorities are currently searching for information about the child's parents.
