STRATHAM, N.H., July 2 (UPI) -- Former presidential candidate Mitt Romney is back in New Hampshire, this time campaigning for Scott Brown.

The former Massachusetts governor will formally endorse Scott Brown's campaign for Democrat Jeanne Shaheen's Senate seat at Scamman's Bittersweet Farm in Stratham -- the same place Romney kicked off his 2012 presidential bid.

Brown's campaign has been off to a rocky a start since he announced his candidacy in April, raising only $2 million between April and June -- compared to $3.4 million in the first quarter of his 2012 Massachusetts race against Elizabeth Warren -- and trailing the incumbent Shaheen by 10-12 points according to the latest polls.

"I think it will certainly inspire folks to raise money -- and give money -- to Brown. It will help loosen those purse strings," Romney's 2012 New Hampshire campaign director Jim Merrill told the Boston Herald. Merrill is now the state RNC's finance chairman.

"This is someone who is seen not only in New Hampshire, but nationally, as a revered Republican statesman, someone who unites the party."

Local Democrats dismissed Romney's intervention, calling into question both Republicans' political loyalties and cultural detachment.

"They both have one thing in common, a commitment to corporations over people," said Chairman of the Massachusetts Democratic Party Thomas McGee.
