YUBA CITY, Calif., June 27 (UPI) -- Authorities in California are trying to determine why human remains were buried with a doll and collection of machetes in a man's backyard after his husky found the odd retrieval.

Aaron Kind called Yuba City police Monday evening after his 4-year-old husky, Skye, dug up the bizarre objects and human remains.

"She never digs in the grass, but that one spot -- she wouldn't leave it alone," Kind told local reporters.

At first the unexpected excavation was a welcome mystery for Kind in his roommates.

"When we pulled out the head of the doll, it was very creepy looking," Kind said. "We found a cloth and then curiosity kicked in and we just started digging it out more. We pulled out the cloth [and] inside was a ceramic or clay pot."

Then they found machetes, followed by a detached jawbone and what police would later confirm to be a human skull.

"It went from kind of cool to kind of serious. We got the authorities on the line. They took it from there."

Investigators are still trying to determine the age of the remains and how they may have gotten to Kind's backyard. Because the objects were in and around a pot, anthropologists believe it's possible they were buried as part of a known Afro-Caribbean religious ritual.

For now, the only clue Kind and his roommates have is a penny dated 1995.
