After the tree fell, the driver lost control of the vehicle and hit a utility pole. The two adults and the two surviving children were treated for injuries.

"It's a tragedy," Conemaugh Township police Chief Louis Barclay told the Tribune-Democrat of Johnstown, Pa. "In 23 years ... I've never seen anything like this."

Police had not released the identities of the people in the car. A family spokeswoman told the newspaper the dead children were both girls.

The tree trunk appeared to be rotten, the newspaper said.
