Arlington National Cemetery suicide victim identified as retired Air Force colonel

ARLINGTON, Va., June 24 (UPI) -- Officials from Arlington National Cemetery have confirmed that the man who killed himself in Arlington National Cemetery Friday was a retired Air Force colonel.

Ninety two-year-old Robert Terrill was found dead of a self inflicted gunshot wound near the 9/11 Pentagon memorial on the morning of June 20. Terrill's wife, Helen Burgess Terrill, passed away in 2009 and was buried in the same section of the cemetery.

"This was a tragic day at Arlington National Cemetery and our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of Col. Terrill," Arlington National Cemetery Superintendent Jack Lechner Jr. said in statement. "We are grateful for his military service to our country."

Neighbors remember Terrill as giving man who was lovingly devoted to his wife.

"He was very good to his wife, he took care of her when she was sick, and any of his friends, he always offered," Janice Gaynor told the Military Times. When Gaynor's husband developed cancer, Terrill would drive her husband to the hospital when she couldn't get off work.

"That was very common, him helping. We were most grateful."
