Wendy Greuel concedes California 33rd primary, election set for Carr, Lieu

Although Republican Elan Carr took first place in the open primary, Democrat Lieu is expected to handily win November's election.

WASHINGTON, June 4 (UPI) -- Democrat Wendy Greuel conceded in the primary race for California's 33rd Congressional District, setting November's election for a showdown between Republican Elan Carr and Democrat state Sen. Ted Lieu.

The seat will be vacated by longtime Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., who was first elected to Congress in 1975 and serves as the ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Carr took first place in Tuesday's open "jungle primary," in which the top two candidates from any party advance to November's general election, with 21.5 percent of the seat.

However, Lieu, who collected 19 percent of the vote, is expected to handily win the seat. Greuel recieved 16.8 percent.
