LOS ANGELES, May 29 (UPI) -- Within less-than-a day of launching, LeVar Burton's campaign to revive the children's show Reading Rainbow reached its million dollar goal.

Funded via Kickstarter, Burton will now revive the PBS program as a web series.

After being cancelled in 2006, Reading Rainbow had a second life as a tablet app, but that still left it inaccessible to many children and families. With the success of his Kickstarter campaign, Burton will be able to distribute the series on the Internet for free and create a special version for teachers to use in classrooms.

Thus far, Burton has raised nearly $2 million dollars. The campaign will continue until July 2.

"I don't know what to say we just crossed the million dollar threshold, it is our first day. I am overwhelmed, thank you so much. This is going to enable us to really really really do a lot of good. I am so proud that this community has come together to support this effort -- and it's a people's thing -- it's the five, it's the ten, it's the twenty-five, it's the one dollar pledges, it's unbelievable. Or, actually, it's actually very believeable. Thank you so much, we are literally changing the world one's children's book at a time."
